The Carlyle House and the Idea of an American Revolution

Did you know that George Washington first suggested the idea of an American revolution in John Carlyle's dining room?

This past weekend I visited the Carlyle House.

The Carlyle House, located in Virginia, Alexandria, is a historic mansion built in 1951 - 1953 by John Carlyle's slaves. John Carlyle was a Scottish merchant who married Sarah née Fairfax, an aristocrat woman with an immense fortune. It was in John's Carlyle's dining room that George Washington first suggested the idea of an American Revolution. However, he was told to be quiet as this was too provocative at the time.

I won't reveal more... If you happen to be in Alexandria and want to take a history lesson, it's worth checking out.

The cost to see the mansion is $5, and given the current coronavirus restrictions, they limit five people per tour. Tours are available Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (last tour at 4 p.m.) and Sunday 12pm - 5pm; the tours last about 45 min. During your tour, you will get a detailed historical account of John's life, the architecture of his mansion, as well as get a close look at the different rooms in the house and their use.

After your visit, you can enjoy a walk in the Old Town, look at 18th century townhouses, sit by the waterfront, or take advantage of the various dining options. Alexandria is close to D.C. and offers plenty of affordable parking options.
